Ticks Ticks are insects of the order Acarina, suborder, Ixodida. Increasingly, ticks are becoming a problem both in and outside of homes; most tick problems arise on properties that abut natural areas, though not always. Ticks have four stages of life: egg, larva, nymph and adult. Female ticks lay eggs after feeding on any vertebrate and certain ticks carry the casual organisms of such diseases as Rocky Mountain spotted fever, typhus, rickettsial pox relapsing fever and tularemia; by far the most important of these is Lyme disease, which is very active in Southern Ontario. Tick management is again a matter for Integrated Pest Management. Animal care, property maintenance, insecticides and growth regulators are all important weapons. Anyone who has a feeding tick on themselves or a pet is cautioned in their removal as Lyme disease is linked to improper tick treatment while the insect is feeding.
