Over five years ago it was reported that there were four million rats in the Metro Toronto area. In New York City an expert reported that at no time is a human being more than ten feet away from a rat. These are big numbers because rats and mice are considered “commensal” pests, meaning, they live with and around humans – the more of us the more of them! Rats are much larger than mice, often growing to nearly 12-inches in body length, plus an almost equally long tail. These mammals are voracious chewers and can cause extensive damage to structures, product and food supplies. Finally, rats do carry disease today as they did in the 14th Century when the “Plague” (carried by fleas that infested rats) wiped out nearly 25-million Europeans.
